St Ursula's College Newsletter 2025 Term 3, Week 4
From our Principal

Last week, we celebrated Catholic Education Week—a special time to reflect on what makes our school community at St Ursula’s so unique.
At our first whole school assembly for Term 3, we talked about what it means to be a Catholic school. For us, it’s about helping young people grow not just in knowledge, but in kindness, courage, and care for others—following the example of Jesus.
St Ursula’s College is shaped by the story and spirit of St Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline tradition. Angela believed in the power of education to change lives, especially for young women. She encouraged people to live with purpose, compassion, and strength, and her message still guides us today.
Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or through helping others, we encourage our students to be thoughtful, generous, and respectful—values that come from our Catholic identity and the example of Jesus and Angela.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Your support helps us build a strong, caring community where every student can thrive.
Celebrating Success…
Last week, James Darlington and Amanda Kilgour were named recipients of a Toowoomba Catholic Schools Excellence Award.
These awards are incorporated into the celebration of Catholic Education Week, with staff across the region nominated. They recognize members of the Toowoomba Catholic Schools community who create exemplary places of learning where every student experiences success. We were fortunate to have two staff nominated, shortlisted and then ultimately, named the recipients of each of the categories for which they were nominated.
Well done to James Darlington as the recipient of Excellence in Leadership – Emerging Leadership and to Amanda Kilgour as the recipient of Excellence in Leadership – Middle Leadership.
We were thrilled to see our staff acknowledged and recognized for the incredible contribution they make, not only to our community, but through their leadership and example, to the wider educational community to which we belong. Congratulations James and Amanda.

It was wonderful to acknowledge 40 years of teaching in Catholic Education with Mary Conaghan. Mary is a well-respected colleague and teacher, who even with over 40 years of teaching experience, continues to model a strong desire to be better each day… she is a true lifelong learner. We were thrilled to welcome Mr Chris Golightly to our assembly on Thursday, to present the award to Mary. Chris was in Mary’s first class back in 1983 as a beginning teacher. It was a special moment. Congratulations Mary.

This week we welcomed Mrs Di Tumbridge, back to St Ursula’s College. Di will be assisting with the teaching of Legal Studies, as Mrs Christle Power commences her maternity leave. We wish Mrs Power and her husband, Elias, all the best as they await the arrival of their first baby.
We were also sad to say farewell to Mrs Karla Knott who finished up at St Ursula’s College on Wednesday of last week. Karla has been an amazing part of our counselling support team for the past four years and will be missed. We wish Karla all the best for the next phase of her journey beyond St Ursula’s College.

There is so much that has and will continue to fill my cup across the past fortnight. One particular moment has been the privilege of listening to our Year 11 students who have been courageous to apply for leadership positions. When I hear their words, so wise, shaped by the story and valued that underpin our College, I am so proud.
It was lovely to be joined by so many parents on Thursday as part of our first whole school assembly for the term where we acknowledged academic distinction from Semester One or Unit One reports. Well done to each girl who received an acknowledgement; it was wonderful to welcome so many parents and grandparents to this occasion.
On Thursday, our First Nations students in Year 12 enjoyed their QATSIF Graduation. I know Mr Kelly will share more details, but in particular I congratulate Paige McKellar for her role in emceeing the occasion. A great accomplishment!
I am excited to join the Year 8 girls on camp this week. That is right, we normally do not have camp in Year 8, but for these girls they get to enjoy the Year 7 camp that was postponed from last year. I also wish our Senior A and Junior A Netball teams all the best as they compete in the Vicki Wilson Netball Cup and Shield on Thursday and Friday this week. I am excited to watch some great netball on Thursday.
Please find attached below an invitation to our Grandparents Day on Thursday 21 August. A mass followed by morning tea and some student-led entertainment. It is always such a popular event, and we are excited again this year, to welcome our 200+ strong crowd. We will also take this opportunity to launch the St Ursula’s College Strategic Plan for 2025 to 2029.
Have a great fortnight, as together, we Strive to Thrive!

🏫 Welcome to Week 4: Lessons from the Mountain
It’s been wonderful to return to St Ursula’s College after spending the past few weeks in Peru, trekking to the iconic Machu Picchu—one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
Sitting on top of Machu Picchu Cerro Mountain, gazing down at immense stonework perched on a steep slope, surrounded by breathtaking views, I was overwhelmed with awe and a profound sense of achievement. Walking the Inca Trail and visiting ancient archaeological sites—structures that have survived invasions, climate shifts, seismic events, and centuries of wear—was a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to create, endure, and rise.
I didn’t realise how strong I was until I had to keep going even when it hurt. That’s when I understood: success is quiet, steady, and built on choices we make when no one’s watching.
This reflection feels especially fitting as we celebrated the outstanding academic achievements of students from Semester 1 at our Week 3 assembly. These students didn’t arrive at success by chance. Like the ancient builders of Machu Picchu, they’ve demonstrated persistence, discipline, and a quiet, unwavering commitment to excellence.
To our Year 12 students heading into the final stages of their learning journey—you are now approaching your summit. The path may be steep, but each step you take is laying the foundation of your future. Like the stones of the citadel, your effort matters. Your resilience is noticed. And your destination is worth the climb.
Let’s keep stepping forward—with purpose and pride.
God Bless
Bernadette

Student Protection at St Ursula’s College: What Parents Need to Know
At St Ursula’s College, the safety and wellbeing of every student is our highest priority. We follow the Student Protection Processes and Guidelines set by the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office, which outline how we create a safe, supportive environment for all students. These documents are available on our website under the "Our College" tab.
Every Student Has the Right to Feel Safe
We believe that all children deserve to learn and grow in environments free from abuse and harm. When this safety is compromised, it is the responsibility of adults to take action.
Understanding Abuse and Harm
Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Sexual Abuse
- Emotional or Psychological Abuse
- Physical Abuse
- Neglect
These can result in different types of harm:
- Physical Harm
- Psychological Harm
- Emotional Harm
Students may experience abuse or harm from various sources:
- Someone within the College (staff, volunteers, or other students)
- A family member or relative
- A person in the wider community (e.g. coach, tutor, neighbor, stranger)
- Through self-harming behaviors
Who to contact at the College
We encourage all parents and students to be familiar with our Student Protection Contacts (SPCs). These staff members are trained to respond to concerns and support students:
Role | Name | |
Principal | Mrs Deidre Young
Deputy Principal | Ms Bernadette Witham
Assistant Principal Pastoral Care | Mrs Maria Gibson

These contacts are listed in student diaries and displayed on Feeling Safe Posters throughout the College as a visual reminder for students.
What You Can Do
We urge you to:
- Review the Student Protection documents on our website
- Talk to your daughter/s about the importance of safety and knowing who to speak to
- Encourage open communication at home and at school
Together, we can ensure that St Ursula’s College remains a safe and nurturing place for every student.

QATSIF Graduation Ceremony at USQ, Toowoomba
We are incredibly proud to announce that three of our Year 12 students participated in the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) graduation ceremony held at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in Toowoomba. This event celebrates the academic achievements and future potential of Indigenous students across Queensland.
Our students who attended were Paige McKellar, Ella Auld and Darcie Gillis.
A special mention goes to Paige McKellar, who took on the prestigious role of Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the event. Paige's confidence and poise in leading the ceremony is a reflection of the leadership skills she has developed during her time at St Ursula’s College.
The QATSIF graduation is a significant milestone for these students, recognizing their hard work, dedication, and the successful completion of their secondary education. It also highlights the importance of programs that support and encourage Indigenous students in their educational journey.
We are immensely proud of Paige, Ella, and Darcie for their participation in this event and for being excellent ambassadors for our school. Special mention to our other recipient, Jorja Britton, who could not attend the ceremony due to Sporting commitments. Their achievement serves as an inspiration to all our students and reinforces our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
As we celebrate this success, we also acknowledge the ongoing support of our school community, including parents, teachers, and staff, who play a crucial role in nurturing the talents and aspirations of our students.
We look forward to seeing what the future holds for these bright young individuals and for all our graduating students as they prepare to embark on their post-secondary journeys.

P.A.R.T.Y. Program
In an eye-opening and deeply moving session, Year 11 and 12 students at the College recently took part in the P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevention of Alcohol Trauma in Youth) Program—an initiative aimed at educating young people about the real-life consequences of risky behaviours, particularly those involving alcohol.
A team of experienced physicians generously gave their time to share firsthand insights from the frontline of trauma medicine, shedding light on the devastating injuries they treat that result from preventable incidents. Adding an unforgettable human dimension, the program featured a powerful story from a trauma survivor (Zach) who spoke candidly about their journey to recovery and the life-changing impact of a split-second decision.
The session wasn't just informative—it was transformative. Students were encouraged to reflect on their choices, the importance of staying safe, and how actions today can shape outcomes tomorrow. Many described the experience as sobering, inspiring, and vital as they approach adulthood.
This visit was a reminder that while parties and celebrations are part of youth, making safe decisions is what keeps those memories happy ones.
Thank you to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program presenters, physicians, and survivor for a truly memorable and meaningful contribution to our senior students' learning.
MC Cup Netball
Our school proudly fielded five teams in this year’s MC Cup against Downlands, with students from across year levels stepping up to represent us in an evening of competitive spirit and loud cheering.
We were thrilled to take out victories in the Junior divisions, where our younger teams displayed fantastic skill, teamwork, and determination. Their wins were a testament to the hard work and preparation they’ve put in over the term.
However, in the overall main game, Downlands proved too strong this time around, securing the win and reclaiming the MC Cup trophy. While the result didn’t go our way, our players showed incredible resilience and sportsmanship throughout the night.
We’ll be back next year—stronger, hungrier, and ready to bring the trophy home!
Newtown Cup
Save the Date: Newtown Cup is just around the corner.

Where – The Glennie School, Clive Berghofer Sports Complex (Indoor Courts)

SSI Red Lions Football
Last week, our talented football team took part in the SSI Football Tournament, showcasing skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the day.
After a series of strong performances in the group stages, the girls advanced to the semi-finals. Although they narrowly missed out on a spot in the final, their effort and sportsmanship were nothing short of inspiring. Every player gave their all, and we couldn’t be prouder of how they represented our school.
A huge thank you goes to Mr Darlington and Mr Broderick for their outstanding organisation and support. Their dedication made it possible for our students to participate in such a memorable and rewarding experience.
Champion of Champions Futsal
We are thrilled to announce that our Under 16 Girls Futsal team has triumphed at the Champion of Champions Regional Competition, securing the title of Regional Champions! After qualifying in Term 1, the team displayed incredible skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the tournament, ultimately emerging victorious against some of the toughest competition in the region.
This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of each player, whose commitment to training and passion for the game truly shone on the court. Their journey to the top has been nothing short of inspiring.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Broderick, whose unwavering support, expert coaching, and belief in the team made this opportunity possible. His guidance has been instrumental in helping these talented young athletes reach their full potential.
Congratulations to our Under 16 Futsal Champions—you’ve made us all incredibly proud!
South West QLD All Schools Touch
Our school proudly entered two teams—Under 15 and Under 18 girls—into the South West Queensland All Schools Touch competition, and what a weekend it was!
Under 15s: Champions in the Making
The Under 15 girls came out firing, dominating their pool rounds with skill, speed and a touch of individual and team brilliance. The girls secured a spot in the grand final, in their semi-final clash against Concordia.
The final against Fairholme was nothing short of electric. Both teams were evenly matched, and the game went down to a drop-off. In a thrilling finish, our girls clinched the win—an achievement that’s been a long time coming. Well done girls we are all so proud of you, it just goes to show again never underestimate an Ursie Girl.

Under 18s: Growth Through Challenge
The Under 18 girls showed great spirit throughout the competition. They experienced both wins and losses, but more importantly, they grew stronger as a team. Each game was a learning opportunity, and the girls embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and resilience. Along the way, they built camaraderie, sharpened their skills, and had plenty of fun.
A Huge Thank You
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Molly Van Heerden and Sophia Head for their outstanding coaching and support. Their guidance played a crucial role in the girls’ development and success, both on and off the field.
Congratulations to all the players for representing our school with pride, passion, and perseverance. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for these talented teams!
Primary Catholic Carnival Netball and Touch Football Officiating
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the incredible group of girls who generously volunteered their time to umpire and referee at the Primary Catholic Schools Netball and Touch Football Carnivals.
Your commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership helped make both events a huge success. You were role models for the younger students, showing what it means to give back to the community. What made your efforts even more admirable was your courage in braving the horrendous weather conditions. With icy winds and temperatures hovering below freezing, it was a true test of endurance—and you passed with flying colours. Despite the chill, you showed up with smiles, stayed focused, and gave it your all.
Volunteering is never easy, especially when it means stepping up in front of teams, coaches, and crowds. But you did it with professionalism and positivity, and we couldn’t be prouder of the way you represented yourselves and your schools.
Thank you again for your time, energy, and sportsmanship. You made a real difference—and we’re so grateful!
