St Ursula's College Newsletter 2025 Term 1, Week 8
From the Principal

I hope this message finds you well. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your incredible responsiveness and understanding during the recent weather events that necessitated the closure of our college for two days. Your swift cooperation and support ensured the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and for that, we are deeply appreciative. Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to our school community.
I was interested to read the following post from Michael Carr-Gregg, a well-known and respected adolescent psychologist. He shares some interesting insights regarding the impact of mobile phone bans in schools. As you are aware, St Ursula’s College this year has changed our mobile phone policy, removing access to mobile phones across the school day.

Michael Carr-Gregg indicates that the approach of banning mobile phones at school has shown some overwhelming positive effects. A survey involving over 3,000 parents, staff, and students showed strong support for the ban, with 93% of principals reporting less time spent on device-related issues and 75% observing improved classroom engagement and student focus. These findings underscore the benefits of our policy in creating a more conducive learning environment.
Moreover, the article points out that students are now more engaged in beneficial activities during breaks and exhibit better behaviour overall. Social media-related incidents have decreased by 57%, and class disruptions have dropped by 83%. These measures are not only enhancing the learning experience but also fostering essential social interactions among students.
The survey conducted by Michael Carr-Gregg certainly shows the benefits to our students with the banning of mobile phones across the school day and indicate this step as crucial for the wellbeing and development of our girls. I thank you, once again, for your continued support of the implementation of our mobile phones policy.
I further, encourage parents to consider the conditions set up at home around the access to technology and in particular to mobile phones and smart devices. The below article seemed to go hand in hand with the above survey conducted by Carr-Gregg, and a must read for all parents.
Should Devices Be in Your Kid’s Bedroom at Night?
Not wanting to give away the punch line, but the answer is NO. Removing devices from the bedrooms at night will protect your daughter’s sleep and this is one of the most powerful things you can do for their mental health, focus, and happiness.
Open Day
There is much to celebrate across the past fortnight but in particular I extend my thanks to all members of our community for their contribution to our Open Day. A wonderful celebration of our identity and an opportunity to share what we know and love about our place with others. We had excellent numbers of new families register to attend the afternoon, and all were well looked after by our ambassadors.

Country Tour
I am also grateful to the communities who have made us feel welcome as part of our Country Tour this week. We will navigate our way to St George, Cunnamulla, Charleville, Quilpie, Mithcell, Roma and Chinchilla. It is lovely to connect with our families out west, and to engage with possible future enrolments.

To our current families, a reminder that we are enrolling now for Year 7 2026 and commencing enrolling for Year 7 2027 in Term 2. Please ensure you have considered completing an application form now for any siblings in Year 5 or 6 and so reminding friends of our community to do the same.
As we enter Weeks 9 and 10, Year 11 and 12 enter into Exam Blocks, and our Junior students' complete assessment pieces for their learning across the term. A reminder that Term 1 concludes on Thursday 3 April, with Friday being our Boarders Travel day, a student free day to conclude the end of the term.
Term Two commences on Wednesday 23 April, with Tuesday 22 April a student free day, Professional Learning and Boarders Travel day.
Take care and enjoy the final weeks of Term One.
Together, we strive,
Mrs Deidre Young
Principal
It is well known that positive and effective relationships between home and school promote student achievement. The critical part of this relationship is effective communication to ensure everybody understands what is happening. To promote this communication at St Ursula’s College, we have clear processes if there are issues which need to be raised.
In the first instance we believe things should be discussed at the level closest to where the student works. As such, the first point of contact for academic concerns is the class teacher while the Pastoral Care teacher is the appropriate person to contact for pastoral issues. If the issue is unresolved at this level, contact may need to be made with the curriculum or pastoral leader. If further assistance is required contact should be made with the appropriate Assistant Principal and/or Deputy Principal. If required, the Principal can then be briefed of any ongoing concerns.
In instances where the matter remains unresolved, parents should follow the St Ursula’s College Complaints Management Policy which can be found via the policies tab on the St Ursula’s College website. Policies, Procedures, Plans And Reports - St Ursula's College Toowoomba

The importance of kindness and respect.
St Ursula’s College prides itself on fostering a safe and supportive environment. At times, however, some students find it difficult to interact in a positive and respectful manner.
According to the Australian Education Ministers (2018), bullying is defined as "an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical, and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social, and/or psychological harm."
This definition highlights two significant aspects of bullying:
- the repetitive nature of bullying and
- the power imbalance that often exists.
It's important to distinguish between bullying and mean behaviour. While both are harmful, they are not the same. Bullying involves a repeated pattern of behaviour with the intent to harm, coupled with a power imbalance. Mean behaviour, on the other hand, can be a single act of hurtful behaviour that does not involve a power imbalance or repetition. For example, someone might say something unkind in a moment of anger, which is mean but not necessarily bullying. Understanding this distinction helps us address each situation appropriately and ensure that all harmful behaviours are managed effectively.
As a school community, we implement many and various strategies to address and prevent bullying.
We promote inclusivity by encouraging students to include others in activities and be mindful of their peers' feelings. Celebrating diversity fosters a sense of belonging.
In our HPE and Wellbeing curriculum, and House Assemblies we educate students about the effects of bullying and the importance of kindness and empathy. We empower our students to safely intervene or seek help when they witness behaviours that are disrespectful and hurtful.
Supporting those involved is necessary for addressing the root causes of bullying. Providing access to our Counselling team and Heads of House for both victims and bullies can help address underlying issues and aid in learning strategies to either stop or ignore/avoid the behaviours.
Parental involvement is also key by demonstrating kindness, empathy, and respect in interactions. These serve as positive modelling. Parents should monitor online activities and provide education about safe internet practices. Teaching students both at home and at school about responsible online behaviour and the consequences of cyberbullying can promote positive digital citizenship.
We encourage you to discuss these strategies with your young people and reinforce the importance of kindness and respect. Together, we can ensure that St Ursula’s College remains a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and supported.

Lent, just like the term is rapidly going by and one of the activities suggested by Caritas Australia for schools to do is a sponsored Big Water Walk. We are aiming to do this during Weeks 9-10 of this term. Currently, 292 million people spend more than 30 minutes walking to collect water.
Students will be asked to walk around the oval for 30 minutes carrying a bucket of water to empathize with the plight of those people and to show compassion for those living in poverty this Lent, during one of their RE lessons. Our fundraising will help to provide clean, safe water to communities in need.
Students are asked to gain sponsors for their walk and the QR code to the St Ursula’s page is on the sponsor form below. Staff or students will not be required to handle any cash as all donations will be online. Students will be advised by their RE teacher as to when they will do this and will be able to wear their Sports uniform for the walk.
Our aim is to provide a school in a developing country with a 10,000L water tank – so that students have fresh water to drink and can remain at school all day.
Thank you in advance for your support.
